A Change

Thursday, September 8, 2022.

My mum texted me to ask if I was at work and that The Queen wasn’t well.  I went online to check the news, saying that her doctors were ‘under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health,’ in a statement from Buckingham Palace.

Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.

The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.

The Palace rarely announce ongoing health issues with Royals, so this statement is alarming.  The Queen’s immediate family, who aren’t already in Scotland, making their way there.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex cancelled an appearance for a charity event in London on Thursday and are making their way to Scotland.

"The palace has gone further than they ever normally do," says the BBC's medical editor, Fergus Walsh.

He said the key phrase in the statement released by Buckingham Palace earlier, was "doctors were concerned".

It feels like the family is gathering to say their goodbyes to their much-loved family member.

I’ve downloaded the BBC News app and signed up for notifications, so I will hear any updates as and when there are any.  But I still can’t help checking the BBC website to see if anything has changed.

The Queen has had to cancel several events over the last year due to ill health, and she looked frail and well for those she has managed to undertake.

I was concerned when I heard that Charles had been making more visits to see her, which is unusual.

She has been having mobility issues since around October 2021, with her health seemingly deteriorating since the death of her husband, The Duke of Edinburgh, in April 2021 after seventy-three years of marriage.

The Queen has reigned for seventy years, and for most people, she is the only monarch the majority of people in the UK will remember, so this is very uncharted territory for us.

It has been said that she only takes a few days off a year, which is unheard of, with the general population retiring around the age of 66.

As I was adding these thoughts to my blog, the news came through at 6.30 pm local time that The Queen had passed away peacefully this afternoon.

It seems unreal.

We now have a King.  King Charles III.  And Queen Consort Camilla.

But all afternoon it felt like this was what it was leading up to.  And that the news readers knew way before the official announcement.

We are living through more unprecedented times.  Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning monarch in British History.

RIP Queen Elizabeth II.

God save King Charles III.
